Ready for a road trip? Check your car before you hit the road

A road trip offers freedom, flexibility, and the chance to explore places you might otherwise fly past. But before you load up the car and head out on the highway, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey. A quick inspection can save you from unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs along the way. Here’s a practical guide to help you prepare your car before you hit the road.
Start with the basics – engine and fluids
Your engine is the heart of your car, and it needs the right conditions to perform well. Take a few minutes to check:
- Oil: Make sure the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. If the oil looks dark or gritty, it’s time for an oil change.
- Coolant: Check that the coolant level is correct and that the fluid looks clean. Low coolant can cause overheating, especially in summer traffic.
- Brake fluid: A low level can indicate worn brake pads or a leak. If you’re unsure, have a mechanic take a look.
- Windshield washer fluid: Top it off, and use a formula suited for the season. Bugs and dust can quickly make your windshield hard to see through.
While you’re under the hood, look for any leaks, loose hoses, or frayed belts that might need attention before you go.
Tires – your connection to the road
Your tires play a major role in both safety and comfort. Check:
- Tread depth: The legal minimum in most states is 2/32 of an inch, but for long trips, it’s safer to have at least 4/32.
- Air pressure: Find the recommended pressure on the sticker inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual. Underinflated tires wear out faster and reduce fuel efficiency.
- Spare tire or repair kit: Make sure it’s in good condition and that you know how to use it.
If you’re carrying heavy luggage or towing, you may need to increase tire pressure slightly for better stability.
Brakes, lights, and wipers
A quick brake test can tell you a lot. Does the car stop smoothly and in a straight line? If you hear squealing or feel vibrations, have the brakes inspected before your trip.
Check all your lights — headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. Not only is this required by law, but it’s also essential for your visibility and safety.
Your windshield wipers should clear the glass without leaving streaks. If they don’t, replace the blades. It’s a small investment that can make a big difference in bad weather.
Comfort and safety inside the car
A long drive is much more enjoyable when the cabin is comfortable. Make sure the air conditioning or ventilation works properly, and adjust your seat, steering wheel, and mirrors for a relaxed but alert driving position.
Check that all seat belts function correctly and that any child seats are properly installed. If you’re traveling across state lines, review local laws about child restraints and safety equipment.
Pack smart
How you pack your car affects both safety and handling. Place heavy items low and close to the center of the vehicle. Avoid leaving loose objects in the cabin — they can become dangerous projectiles in a sudden stop.
If you’re using a roof box or cargo carrier, check the weight limits for both the box and the roof rack. A heavy load on top can affect balance and increase fuel consumption.
Plan for breaks and emergencies
Even a well-prepared car can run into trouble. Make sure you have:
- A warning triangle or reflective road flares
- A first-aid kit
- A flashlight and gloves
- Jumper cables and basic tools
- The number for roadside assistance
Plan regular breaks, especially on long drives. Fatigue is one of the leading causes of highway accidents, so switch drivers if possible and take time to rest.
A smooth start to your adventure
Once your car is checked and packed, you’re ready to enjoy the open road. Leave early to avoid stress, and remember — your vacation starts the moment you turn the key. With a well-prepared car and a little planning, you can drive off with peace of mind and focus on the adventures that await.
